Phteah Sangkeum (House of Hope) in Siem Reap Cambodia

Welcome to Phteah Sangkeum! In the Khmer language, Phteah Sangkeum means House of Hope. It’s a Retreat Center with a passion for promoting nothing but Local Enterprising and Community Based Tourism.

WHY RETREAT CENTER?

The word Phteah Sangkeum, means House of Hope if directly translated into the English language.

Formerly known as The Sangkheum Center for Children, it was established in 2001 with the purpose of housing, educating, feeding, and preparing for almost 300 children between the ages of 4 and 17. Most of them are either coming from a very poor family background, while the majority are orphans, and the others are sadly neglected by the society and seeking asylum. Teens who are about to be released after the program are taught with vocational training in order to attain a job after graduation. In this way, they are prepared to be re-integrated into the community and welcomed as responsible young adults.

Since its closure, the building and its surrounding were left unattended, changing the happy landscape to a dry and cold glare. Trying to find a way on rebuilding its former glory, the founders are actively seeking a way on looking for new sponsors, until a spark of a new idea came out, which it leads the way on re-opening the center under a new name.

The announcement of its re-opening brought such joy to all its former teachers and students. As a part of the agreement with the new operator and founders, maintaining the original look, building attachments, and garden-surrounding must adhere with respect to the tradition of the center. With some minor modification, the approach is to improve the safety level and was embraced by both parties to serve its purpose – housing guests and experience Community-Based Tourism.

The transformation of Phteah Sangkeum developed a stronger and deeper tie within the communities. By redefining its purpose, commune leaders had accepted and recognized Phteah Sangkeum as a model of Community Based Tourism and a genuine promoter of Social Enterprise. All of our services and activities are related to promoting the local communities of Touek Vil and Khanat and help its local economy to grow, with the help of tourism.

These communities depict the local living conditions of Cambodians who depend their living on rice and vegetable farming, raising the animal to live stocks and freshwater fishing. Very rich in tradition, all Guests are expected to receive a warm welcome not only from our staff but also from these communities.
